North Conway, NH – The Mount Washington Valley Trails Association (MWVTA) has been awarded $1 million in federal funding through the Northern Border Regional Commission (NBRC) Catalyst Program. The funding will support Phase 2 of the MWV Rec Path, which will construct an accessible paved multi-use path linking Cranmore Mountain Resort to the Intervale Scenic Overlook, extending the popular Phase 1 project from Hemlock Lane to Cranmore and completing a seamless network of trails from North Conway’s downtown to the overlook. This transformative project will enhance recreation, tourism, and accessibility in the Mount Washington Valley.

“This is a new grant for $1 million which completes the funding of our total estimated project cost for Phase 2 (including construction and engineering) of $4.2 million,” said Chris Meier, Board President of MWVTA. “The MWVTA is pleased to partner again with the Northern Border Regional Commission on Phase 2 of the Rec Path. NBRC strongly supports recreational and alternative transportation amenities such as the Rec Path, which helps catalyze rural economic vitality and reduce poverty, unemployment, and outmigration.

After the substantial design of the project, the cost estimate for the project increased to the current $4.2 million, including all engineering. NBRC’s support will allow us to cover this cost increase and complete the Phase 2 project on the current schedule in spring of 2027.”

The MWV Rec Path project is part of a broader effort by NBRC to invest in economic and community development throughout the region. In total, more than $10 million in federal funding was awarded to projects across New Hampshire, supporting initiatives such as water infrastructure upgrades, childcare center renovations, and workforce development programs. Recipients include the Winchester Economic Development Corporation, Families Flourish Northeast Inc., the Town of Whitefield, and others.
